CrossFit for me has become more than an exercise program, it has become a way of life. I have never felt stronger, healthier, more fit or confident in my life! I stumbled upon CrossFit as a runner and I quickly became addicted. I thought I was ‘in shape’ as a runner. Boy, was I wrong! I fell in love with the barbell, with CrossFit and I encourage everyone, ESPECIALLY you women out there to challenge yourself and get out of your comfort zone. Strength training doesn’t make you big or bulky, it makes you strong, lean, and helps your body burn fat. I have run eight marathons, two ultra marathons, an adventure race and a bunch of small races. I love to compete in CrossFit and have been able to compete twice at Regionals on a team in 2011 and 2014.

Now, almost 10 years later I continue to work on and study the Sport of Fitness as an athlete and a coach.

I love seeing people’s lives transformed by the confidence being healthy, feeling fit, and being strong gives you. I dreamed of owning a gym with a fun, supportive community, where people can come and be supported – like anything is possible!

This is how Tobin Hill has grown.

Don’t be intimidated by what you think you know about CrossFit, everyone can do it, one way or another. If you are ready to change your life, feel fit, healthy and strong, you owe it to yourself. You are worth it!!

The best days are when I get to watch an athlete light up with excitement after accomplishing something they didn’t think they could do. It is fantastic to be a part of and share their victory with the class.

I never thought I’d be a CrossFit coach, in fact I thought my job was to build the gym and then I’d just get to work out and help with all the other jobs to help support my wife in this endeavor she so dearly wanted. It started with me finishing the 6 am classes on the days she needed to leave for work at the hospital. I was terrified, but like everything in life, repetition leads to knowledge and skill. The more I lived life outside my comfort zone, the more I realized my comfort zone was growing.

Now I selfishly love to coach classes. I say I’m selfish because I get better with each moment, each rep if you will. I get something from each and every member and I love to see people grow. It’s not always easy and I’m not always polished but I strive to get a little better each class. Most days I’m successful, some I’m not, but I’ll never give up.

I sincerely hope you will give us a shot. No matter where you are in life and health, I want to help you to find what I’ve found.

I’ve been involved in sports my whole life: gymnastics, basketball, track, high school swim and water polo team. However, though these activities did introduce a solid fitness foundation for me, I despised them. I remember in high school waking up almost crying because I was dreading swim practice so much. I saw exercise as a chore, something I had to do, not something I wanted to do.

This all turned upside down when I started doing CrossFit. I attended my first class the summer after my freshman year of high school at the age of 15. It was an extremely humbling experience to say the least. I thought I would be in better shape than most people because I would spend two hours swimming everyday. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I realized I didn’t know how to do something as elementary as a squat or a box jump. My first few months taught me there was more to fitness than just being a fast swimmer. There was a whole new world to not only explore but to master. After I had finished out my swim season senior year of high school, I immediately started doing CrossFit year round rather than just during the summers. I have absolutely fallen in love with this sport and plan to do it for the rest of my life.

In January of 2017 I received my L1 certification which I have since used to receive my CrossFit Kids certification. I have always had a passion of teaching and guiding kids and I love that I can share this sport with them. I am currently studying music at St. Mary’s University but I hope to continue to train in and Coach CrossFit for the rest of my life. This sport has changed my life for the better and I hope to share that experience with others.

Hey everyone. I’m a transplant from Virginia and moved to San Antonio in October 2014. I started CrossFit in August 2009 on the advice of a friend. Up until then, I had been a typical Globogym rat lifting weights four to five times a week. When the day arrived to try out CrossFit, I was supposed to meet my friend at the box for my first WOD, but he bailed at the last minute. So there I was, walking into the box not knowing what I had gotten myself into. Funny thing is, I still remember being nervous walking in, not knowing anyone and thinking to myself ‘What am I doing?’

At the end of my first WOD I thought I was going to die, but was immediately hooked. After six months of bouncing back and forth between CrossFit and the Globogym I decided I was all in on CrossFit. It was one of the best decisions I ever made and I’ve been preaching the CrossFit Kool-aid ever since to anyone who will listen (Not kidding…my family is tired of hearing about it). CrossFit really does change peoples lives for the better and the proof is in the community.

I decided early on I wanted to coach and I received my Level 1 certification in July 2010. I began coaching in October 2010 up until I left Virginia in March of 2014. I first learned of Tobin Hill CF from Heidi while we attended our Level 1 re-certification in May 2015 here in San Antonio. Several months passed before things came to fruition, but I can truly say I missed coaching. I missed the interaction with the community, I missed helping people reach their goals and I missed seeing people surprise themselves with what they can accomplish. Most may not realize it, but your coaches take great pride in what you all accomplish on a daily basis and we strive to see you succeed in whatever it is you set your sights on.

Why I am here:

I am here, because each and everyone of us has our own story to tell, from our own roads traveled. No matter your story or your current health/ fitness condition, I have seen first hand how CrossFit can change lives! I’ve experienced multiple atmospheres of gyms, and I truly believe that here, at THCF, each and every staff member, and gym member want the very best for you!

* Energy and Passion: From the warm up to the cool down, I promise to bring the utmost fun and open class environment for your hour of commitment.

* Open Mindedness: CrossFit offers infinite scalability, and my classes and outlook match that of the fitness regiment that we love so much. You should never and will never feel left out or uncomfortable with any WOD or strength movement.

Background:

I was born the morning…late October, San Antone!!! Just kidding, it was July, back in 1987, and Ben and Jerry released the long standing flavor Cherry Garcia!

I’m just your average dad, to the coolest 2 1/2 year old, Max. 31 years old, born and raised in San Antonio!

I started CrossFit back at the end of 2011. I was 23 years old, and tipping the scales at nearly 500lbs. Any scale that I stepped on, begged me to step off immediately. Through true grit, a great support system, and countless Wods, I am here, alive and well. Most people that know me, would tell you that I am an open book, when it comes to my journey, and I most definitely look forward to helping you with yours.

I started doing CrossFit in 2015 at age 24. I was persuaded by my friend at work who had just started CrossFit herself. I was hesitant to come; I was intimidated by what I had heard and seen about CrossFit. During high school, I played soccer, both for the school and club. I also ran cross country and am an avid horseback rider. After high school I wasn’t as active and managed to gain way more than those freshman 15. I was still riding horseback but that was the only activity I was really getting. I quickly learned my lifestyle was taking its toll on my body and my health. I was having trouble keeping up with my horse, running short on breath and even needing help to get on my horse. I realized I had to do something about my health, so I started running. I started running about 400 meters every morning and that would kill me! That’s when my friend told me about her starting CrossFit. With much debate and persuasion, we made plans on my day off work to meet at Tobin Hill CrossFit. After my first WOD I was instantly hooked. I never thought I would pay someone to challenge (and in a sense torture me!) 3-5 times per week, but I decided to invest in my future self. Without hesitation I signed up that very day. I started noticing the difference in my health when I was doing the things I love, like playing with my nephews and niece, riding, roping. Just doing everyday tasks, moving objects like furniture, cash dispensers, or bales of hay, I felt stronger!As much as I love wall balls, pull ups, thrusters, and squats I quickly fell in love with the barbell. The physical and mental challenge weightlifting requires, as well as the combination of mobility, strength, coordination, focus and self-confidence did not come at all natural to me. It has required a lot of hard work, but weightlifting has become a sort of re-energizing factor for me. With great coaching and support from our OLY coach, Gabe, as well as the rest of the THCF community I just competed in my first weightlifting meet!

CrossFit changed my life not just physically but mentally. My life took on purpose and has helped me discover things I didn’t know about myself. Not only have the challenges of every WOD changed me but the community in CrossFit has been a major factor. I have made not only lifelong friends but a second family here. The way we motivate and empower each other still gives me the goosebumps. The energy and enthusiasm, the hard work that goes into every rep, the mental toughness and focus during every WOD in every member; that is what I love about CrossFit and our Tobin Hill CrossFit community.With a slight push from THCF I got my Level 1 and found a love in the CrossFit mission. I found out that I want to help people be happy and healthy. Seeing the members smiling reaction to their newfound potential and strength is the greatest reward, I as a coach, can ask for.I want to give back to the members of our community; your health and happiness becomes my reward. Your journey and your goals become ours too.

If you’re outside Tobin Hill and hear what sounds like an earthquake, no worries, it’s probably just Gabe’s bar dropping…

Gabe is our Oly/weightliting coach, and not only is he a great coach, he’s bad ass lifter himself. Check out one of his Wednesday OLY classes to refine your technique and get hella strong.

Gabe’s favorite lift is the snatch.

Whenever I tell new people that I CrossFit, I always assure them that I’m not part of “the cult.” But that’s a total lie. I have totally drunk the CrossFit kool-aid.
I found CF back in 2014 in southern California. I was super intimidated by what I figured would be a bunch of big beefy men throwing tires all around, but finally got the nerve up to try a free Saturday class. Within three weeks I had an unlimited membership and have been at the box at least 5 days a week ever since. When I was growing up, I was a straight-A nerd who took dance classes. The idea that I could be an “athlete” totally blew me away.
To me CrossFit is more than just a work-out, it’s totally changed my life. I love the way it includes everybody. No matter your age, history, or fitness level, CrossFit has something for you. Any movement or workout can be scaled. It has changed the way I view myself, my body, and my abilities.
My proudest CrossFit moment was way back at my first box, the first time that I completed a “girl” workout Rx (Helen – and it took me forever.) My CF biggest struggles are touch-and-go cleans, and being the slowest runner ever! My favorite movements of all time are handstand push-ups.

When I’m not at the box, I spend my time taking care of the little bald ones on the cancer unit at the Children’s Hospital downtown.

I moved to San Antonio in 2013 from Florida. I grew up playing baseball, and have always been active. Mostly working out at globo gyms and with sport specific strength coaches. I first became aware of crossFit when some friends in Tampa opened a box. I was really interested in the workouts, but an ongoing shoulder injury was too prohibitive at the time. In November of 2018, after a couple more shoulder surgeries, a friend from work who coached at Tobin Hill talked me into going to my first class. It didn’t hurt that another friend from work started going at about the same time and was constantly trying to talk me into going too. Fast-forward a year and I have my Level 1, work out almost every day in the 5:00 am class, and am now coaching. While most people think crossFit is where you go to get hurt, I am an example of how beneficial crossFit can be. My mobility has improved ten fold over the last year. I could hardly put a plate in the kitchen cabinet when I walked into Tobin Hill the first time, and I am now snatching pain free. I love dead lifts, running, and anything body weight. My favorite workout is Murph. I have more shoes than our gym has barbells.

I was a junior in high school when my cousins introduced me to CrossFit to train for football. I immediately fell In love with the concept of CrossFit because my first workout was done in the back alley of the house! It was simply kettlebell swings and running, not too hard, but enough to make a varsity football player who lives in the gym feel weak! I first tried out another CrossFit gym with my cousin before I found Tobin Hill CrossFit. The moment I walked in I fell in love with this place! Heidi and Mitchell made me feel welcome and I knew I was at home. After my first workout I signed up for the unlimited plan and basically moved into the gym, working out all day until closing time. I guess you could say I was hooked! Over time I noticed changes all around; I went from semi athletic teen who wouldn’t finish first (but also who wouldn’t finish last in workouts at school) to beating people who I didn’t think I would ever out lift or out run! And now, after 4 years of CrossFit, I made a bigger goal, to become a coach. During my time at Tobin I have been coached by the best group of coaches I could have ever asked for! They taught me everything I know about CrossFit, lifting, and technique…which has given me the confidence to help our community at Tobin hill and share the knowledge I have soaked up. My favorite thing is watching someone do something they didn’t know they could do and achieve their goals.
